These days I read “If there is hope, it lies in the proles.” as a statement of the hopelessness of the situation. Orwell focused on two proles in the book: a woman hanging up laundry while singing a soulless machine-produced song, and the old man who could consider no historical context, only anecdotes and personal pleasure. Most proles by economic class are proles in soul and mind as well; and while they may be better able to surpass the ideology than the invested-and-indoctrinated Outer Party cogs, this is because they have no capacity for ideology. The Party is right when it says “proles and animals are free.”
