You mentioned chapter 26 of Leviticus. In the early 1980s I decided to try reading the Bible straight through from beginning to end. After plodding through Genesis and Exodus, I skipped through Leviticus because there were so many do’s and dont’s, finally reaching chapter 26, where YaYa says what he’ll do if the people don’t obey his statutes. In verse 17 we read: “…and you shall flee when none pursues you” (RSV). I was suddenly struck with the thought that this line could be a succinct definition of paranoia – which then led to the realization that much of what I’d been reading could be chalked up to psychology, and that the voices supposedly heard by Abraham, Moses et al, was their developing ego.
